A Seasonal Guide to Visiting Kakheti’s Wineries

Powered by GetYourGuide

Located in eastern Georgia, Kakheti is the country’s premier wine region, steeped in centuries-old winemaking traditions and more than 100 wineries. Each season looks at Georgian wine culture in a different light-from spring buds into the cozy winter tastings of qvevri.
Spring (March to May)

As nature awakens, Kakheti’s vineyards burst into life with tender green shoots and new leaves. Spring visitors can witness the first crucial stages of the vintage, including vine pruning and early cultivation. The mild temperatures, typically ranging from 15-20°C (59-68°F), create perfect conditions for vineyard tours and outdoor tastings.

Many wineries organize special spring programs in which guests can participate in traditional Georgian vine blessing ceremonies. The famous white wine varieties of the region, Mtsvane and Rkatsiteli, taste especially great during this time of year with fresh spring vegetables and young Georgian cheese.

Summer (June to August)

Summer brings long, sun-drenched days to Kakheti, with temperatures often reaching 30-35°C (86-95°F). The vineyards are in full bloom, and the grapes begin their journey toward maturation. This is the perfect season for early morning or late afternoon winery visits, often combined with alfresco dining in vineyard restaurants.

Visitors in summer can enjoy cooling Kakhuri white wines and rosés while touring the historic wineries of Tsinandali and Telavi. Many estates offer evening tastings on their terraces with views of the Caucasus Mountains. The season is ideal for combining wine tours with visits to nearby monasteries and the region’s impressive cultural heritage sites.

Fall (September to November)

The most interesting time in Kakheti is autumn, when festivities named rtveli take place on every farm for grape harvest. Here, guests are invited to join grape picking, treading in a traditional way, and filling up Georgia’s famous clay fermentation vessels called qvevri. The air temperature-very comfortable at 15-25°C (59-77°F)-and wonderful fall colors contribute to an out-of-this-world atmosphere.

This is the best time to experience all of Georgian winemaking: from harvest and fermentation to very fresh grape juice on its road of transformation to wine, up to the consecration of the new qvevri. Many wineries throw festivals and feasts with massive traditional food and drink, music, and fun flowing freely.

Winter (December to February)

Winter in Kakheti offers a more intimate wine experience. While temperatures can drop to 5-10°C (41-50°F), the region’s famous hospitality warms visitors with cozy tastings around traditional fireplaces. This is the perfect season to explore the region’s renowned red wines, particularly the robust Saperavi variety.

Many wineries have special winter programs with wine and chacha tastings, often combined with heavy Georgian dishes. Winter visitors can also witness the opening of qvevris and the first tastings of the new vintage. The Caucasus Mountains with snowy tops against the clear winter sky present a breathtaking view for camera lenses.

Practical Tips for Year-Round Visits

It is advisable to book in advance for visits to the wineries throughout the year, especially the smaller family concerns. Many provide accommodation, ranging from modest guesthouses to luxury wine resorts. It is highly recommended to hire a local driver or use organized tours due to winter roads and possible summer temperature discomfort on long drives.
